Technically speaking, ketamine is not a psychedelic. It's a dissociative drug that at certain doses can lead to psychedelic-like experiences. Research and anecdotal reports suggest it's helpful for treatment-resistant depression and other ailments, although it doesn't seem to have the long-term staying power classical psychedelics are showing.
So, what's the role of ketamine? Well, it's currently the only legal option in most states. Making it the most accessible both for clients seeking treatment and for therapists who are interested in getting more experience with altered states of consciousness.
In anticipation of other psychedelic substances being regulated for therapeutic purposes, many therapists have participated in ketamine clinics to gain more experience working with altered states of consciousness. Some even pursue their own experiences as a client at ketamine clinics so they can experience some relief from burnout while doing their own field research in altered ego states (myself included).
If you've taken some training and are eager to get started in the field of psychedelic therapies, looking around your area at local ketamine clinics is a reasonable place to start.
One option (that you could start working on today) would be to network with local ketamine clinics and offer your services as an integration therapist. You'd be surprised at how many of these clinics are not offering integration therapy. Most would be excited to learn of another therapist they can refer clients to. Depending on your level of training or experience, some may even want to bring you on as an employee or contractor!
So, go on and find out what opportunities are available near you!
Until next time,
Chris
